Advancing construction industry practices: Insights from panel discussion on price calculation mechanisms

The Serbian Chamber of Commerce’s Association for the Construction Industry recently organized a lecture and panel discussion titled “Mechanism for calculating price differences in construction.” This event, held on March 29, 2024, at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce premises, attracted a diverse audience, including civil engineers involved in technical preparation and contracting of construction works, as well as experts specializing in business analytics in construction.

The lecture, titled “Allotropic modification of the sliding scale,” was delivered by Prof. Dr. Dragan Arizanović from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade. During the lecture, various models for calculating construction prices and the application of the sliding scale mechanism were discussed as responses to market instability in building materials and services.

The panel discussion, held in the second part of the meeting, featured distinguished participants such as Prof. Dr. Dragan Arizanović, Prof. Dr. Miljan Mikić (Executive Director of “OROOK”), Zvonimir Marković (Director of “Srbijaautoput”), Predrag Filipović (Director of “M Enterijer gradne”), Marko Pavlović (BIM Manager at “Jadran”), Andreja MiloÅ¡ević from “VMS,” and Biljana Dimitrijević from “Strabag.” Borisav Milutinović, Executive Director of “Hidrotan,” served as the moderator.

During the panel discussion, the participants shared their experiences regarding the challenges associated with implementing sliding scales and the impact of fluctuations in construction material prices on contract execution. It was concluded that upcoming workshops on sliding scales, as well as proposed construction regulations being developed within the working group established in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, along with the planned updates to construction standards, will contribute significantly to risk reduction and improvement of the business environment for companies in the construction industry.
