Wind power in Serbia: not enough used potential

The Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović, said today at the ceremony, which was organized by the Association of Renewable Energy Sources of Serbia at the „Elicio“ wind park in Alibunar on the occasion of World Wind Day, that it is necessary to make smart use of all the natural potential available, among which wind, in order to be successful in the energy transition.

Đedović emphasized that studies show that the calculated wind power in the windiest area of Serbia is comparable to that of Europe, but that currently we only get three percent of electricity from the wind.

“However, we recently broke a small record.” For the first time, we were among the top 10 countries in Europe with an 11 percent share of daily wind production in the national mix, thanks to the operation of eight wind farms in Serbia with a capacity of 400 MW, in which 730 million euros were invested,” said the minister.

She reminded that the Government of Serbia and the Ministry of Mining and Energy have launched auctions for the allocation of market premiums for RES, which will result in 450 new green megawatts, and in the next three years 1,300 MW, which will improve energy security and reduce the negative impacts of energy on environment, the ministry announced, Tanjug reported.

We believe that the auctions will be the initiator of a new big investment cycle, we base our optimism on the fact that there are more than 1,000 MW of ready-made wind power projects, and with the auctions we will encourage the inflow of direct foreign investments, the growth of GDP, the development of the construction industry, with the potential reduction of electricity costs and safer supply of our economy and citizens, said the minister.

“And not only that, it is estimated that with the successful implementation of the auctions, the Electric Power Company of Serbia will generate more than three million euros annually, taking into account the relevant market prices,” said Đedović.
