China Dominates Serbia’s Exports, Surpassing 2.5 Billion Euros in Trade

The largest exporters in Serbia in 2023 were Chinese companies Zijin Mining, Zijin Copper, and HBIS Group, as announced by the Ministry of Finance.

Zijin Mining’s exports from Brestovac amounted to 1.15 billion euros, Zijin Copper from Bor reached 746.3 million euros, and HBIS Group from Smederevo had exports totaling 549.1 million euros.

Zijin Mining is the sole owner of the Čukaru Peki mine in Timočka Krajina in eastern Serbia, which it acquired in 2019 from the Canadian company Freeport McMoran for 390 million dollars.

By the decision of the Serbian government, in December 2018, Zijin Copper acquired 63% of the former Mining and Smelting Basin Bor (RTB), a producer of copper and gold. This acquisition was made through a payment of 350 million dollars for recapitalization.

Hesteel, a subsidiary of the Chinese HBIS Group (Hebei Iron and Steel Group), purchased the Smederevo Steel Mill in 2016 for 46 million euros, with the Serbian government taking over the debts of the steel mill.

The export value of the 15 largest companies in Serbia last year amounted to seven billion euros.

The German company in the automotive industry, ZF Friedrichshafen, located in Pančevo, ranked fourth with an export value of 504.8 million euros. Following closely in fifth place is the German auto cable factory, Leoni, located in Prokuplje, with an export value of 489.3 million euros.

Following is the automobile tire factory Tigar Tyres from Pirot, owned by the French company Michelin, ranking sixth with an export value of 454.9 million euros.

Seventh is the German technology company Bosch, located in Belgrade, with an export value of 453.1 million euros, and then the German consumer goods manufacturer Henkel, also located in Belgrade, with exports amounting to 405 million euros.

The South Korean cable manufacturing company Yura from Rača exported goods worth 394.3 million euros.

Among the major exporters is the Russian Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), which was sold to Gazprom Neft in 2008 for 400 million euros, with exports reaching 386.6 million euros.

The export value of the German pharmaceutical company Hemofarm from Vršac in 2023 was 351.9 million euros.
