Hyundai and UGT Renewables selected as strategic partners for the construction of EPS solar power plants

As a strategic partner for the implementation of the Project for the construction of large-capacity self-balanced solar power plants with battery systems for electricity storage, the Government of Serbia has chosen the joint offer of a group of bidders, Hyundai Engineering Co.LTD, Hyundai Eng. America Inc. and UGT Renewables LLC, was published in the Official Gazette on October 27th.

It is, by the way, a project with an estimated value of 1.4 billion euros, within which the Electric Power Company of Serbia (EPS) is looking for a strategic partner for the construction of at least five high-capacity solar power plants, as well as a battery storage system with a capacity of at least 200 MW.

The deadline for the submission of offers from potential strategic partners of EPS expired on September 20th, and Hyundai and UGT Renewables were selected to implement the project, in the framework of which EPS should develop, build and hand over at least five solar power plants, as well as battery systems for energy storage, but also to build other infrastructure necessary for their functioning.

The winner of the tender is also expected to propose locations for future solar power plants.

The project of building self-balanced solar power plants was ranked second among the sixty priority projects of the EPS in the document “Basic principles of the energy infrastructure development plan for the period until 2028 with projections until 2030”, in which more than 200 projects from of all energy sectors, with data on whether and how much progress has been made in their implementation.

When it comes to the details of the project, it is expected that its implementation will provide an additional gigawatt of electricity from renewable sources, with an expected annual production of 1.2 TWh.

According to the EPS plans, the construction should be completed in 2028, and the financing of this project with an estimated value of 1.4 billion euros is planned through loans. The money has not yet been secured, but the budget for 2024 plans that the state can borrow for this purpose through project or program loans.
